How to save information from the HIC WAS website.
When saving information from the internet click on your browser's 'file' menu (usually at the top of the page on the left hand side) and select the 'save as' option. Take notice of the 'save as type' drop down menu that appears just below where you type the file name. Both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator offer several different 'save as' file types each of which has different benefits and drawbacks.
One popular file format is 'HTML' or 'webpage'. HTML or Hyper Text Markup Language, is the computer language used to build websites. If you choose to save as 'HTML' or "webpage', your browser will save the entire page including all the formatting, pictures, colour and links. A popular use of saving as a webpage is to store information to your hard drive so that you can refer to it when you are not on-line. You might, for example save the HIC WAS home page to your desktop. This way you can have the entire HIC WAS website at your fingertips at any time, not just when you log on to the internet. A drawback to this method of saving is that the file size can be very large and most pages will not fit on a floppy disk.
Another way to save, is to save as 'text only'. If you choose this file format, your browser will save just the bare bones of the page you are looking at. Most often this means that the formatting and pictures will be lost. This format is useful if you wish to save specific information rather than the webpage itself. As the file will be text only, the information can easily be opened in word processors or text editor programs such as Microsoft Word, Word Perfect and Notepad.
If you wish to save just a small portion of a webpage, you can choose to highlight the text using your mouse, copy it (by clicking the button on the right of your mouse and selecting copy) and then paste it to your favorite text editor, your hard drive or a floppy disk. The advantage of this is that the formatting, links and pictures will often also be saved. The drawback is that, depending on the specifications of your computer and the program you paste to, the behind the scenes HTML may also be copied and show up as text.
Please note that while there are many ways to save information from a website, you must also be conscious of Copyright laws. That is that, it is illegal to copy and distribute Copyright information without the permission of the holder of the Copyright.
It is permissible to copy and distribute all the information found on the HIC WAS site so long as it remains in its original form and is not altered by individual users. For further information, please contact the HIC WAS Secretariat, Women Advancement Trust at: wat@ud.co.tz
