Canada: WoPHE (Women's Perspectives on Housing and the Environment)

WoPHE (Women's Perspectives on Housing and the Environment) works to encourage networking, discussion, practical skill development, knowledge and analysis regarding women's relationships to housing and the environment. These activities not only assisted participants but also were important to inform policy. WoPHE had a tremendous start in the mid 1990's. Many women from many different language groups and social backgrounds have participated in WoPHE over the years. Though many participated, the funding for WoPHE was raised through the lobby and fund raising efforts of primarily one volunteer. Recent unsuccessful efforts at fund raising has severely limited networking and other activities. Other means of funding in this rapidily changing economic climate continues to be central to sustain WoPHE activities.

There are publications highlighting WoPHE activities in several languages and a video highlighting WoPHE activities was provided to the HIC Women and Shelter Group Network Secretariat.

HIC Women and Shelter Network Germany/ FOPA Hamburg e.v.

FOPA is a network of women planners and architects in Germany founded in 1981. FOPA Hamburg has started to act as an Iniative Centre for the HIC Women and Shelter Network in Germany in 1994. We have been active in the context of the Habitat II - Conference. In 1995 we organized the first National Round Table of Women Planners for Habitat II on "Gender-sensitive and sustainable human settlements development" in cooperation with our sister organisation, the SRL- Working Group "Women in Planning" (SRL- Organisation for Urban und Regional Planning, Germany). Since then we have been participating in the Istanbul-Conference and the following UN Commissions on Human Settlements in Nairobi to stress women´s and gender issues. In Germany we raised gender issues in the context of global urbanisation and informed about the commitments made by our government and the United Nations towards sustainable and gender-sensitive urban development which are fixed in the Habitat Agenda and the Agenda 21.

Mail us ! We are looking forward to grow and exchange material and views on our urban future.

Mazingira Institute

We look at how the global relates to the local, in a globalising and urbanising world. A world of skewed development in which the human dignity and empowerment of the few rather than the many is realized. We see the overlap of the global and the local, or the web of'glocalization' intensifying in diverse places, affecting social and decision process, practices and governance.

Our voice is for the realization of human dignity and empowerment of everyone - women, men and children and for ecological integrity everywhere. Making the global act for the local is of concern to us.

We integrate diverse ways to inquire and to act. Our work extends relevant knowledge and practices, promotes learning and cooperation and enhances ethical solidarity and advocacy.

Women's Housing Rights Project, Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions

COHRE's Women's Housing Rights Programme (WHRP) undertakes various activities to develop further and understand housing rights from women's perspectives and experiences. Co-ordinated by Leilani Farha, the WHRP has undertaken a variety of activities since its inception in 1998 such as, advocacy at the United Nations for new legal standards pertaining to women's housing rights, research and publications on housing rights issues as they affect women, and presentations on the importance of housing and related rights for women. Though the WHRP is still in its formative years, a number of innovative and exciting projects have been accomplished or are underway.

One of COHRE's recent publications, Sources 5 : Women's Housing Rights, is the first compilation of international law directly related to women's rights to land, property, inheritance and housing. The WHRP has also worked to establish new international standards on women's housing rights at the UN Commission on Human Rights. The WHRP has partnered with NGOs in Nigeria, Palestine and India and is coordinating research studies in each of these regions on the impact of forced evictions on women. To complement this research, the WHRP is also hosting an Internet list serve devoted exclusively to the issue of women and forced evictions.
